Happy 90th birthday Pete Seeger!

Where have all the banjos gone?

Today is Pete Seeger’s birthday. He has made it to the big nine-oh!

Last night Radio 4 broadcast a profile of Seeger’s life. It was only a measly 55 minutes long and so failed to discuss in great detail all the exciting aspects of his ninety years of life or to play excerpts from the best songs in his extensive back catalogue.  But still, it was a decent programme about a thoroughly decent man.

The problems of the world won’t be solved by strumming away on a guitar (or banjo). Seeger appreciates this. However, he also understands the power of song as a form of communication. Seeger said on the programme that songs can “make us forget our troubles or they can help tell us what to do about them”, which is one way of thinking about it.

He’s too old to do much singing or banjo-playing these days, but he’s still on the bill to perform at this year’s Clearwater festival over in the States. There aren’t many 90 year olds still gigging. What a guy.
